Remedies Using Yellow Dock Root

Yellow dock, rumex crispus or also known as curly dock is a bitter herb. The part of this plant that is used is the root because of its high mineral content. It acts as an astringent and produces a mild laxative effect.

Rumex crispus root extract is good for the liver since it acts as a blood purifier. Clinical studies discovered that curly dock is able to stimulate biliary function in the liver and help get rid of arsenic and lead.


The root extract is also used by herbalists to support healthy blood and is used as a remedy for anemia and other iron deficiency symptoms. This is because curly dock is able to boost the iron levels in the blood.

Because of its cleansing effect and ability to shrink inflamed tissues, curly dock is used as an herbal remedy to treat skin disorders such as acne, boils, eczema, pimples and psoriasis. The traditional way of using the leaves for skin eruptions, sores and swellings is to crush them and use it as a compress.


Because of its mild laxative effect, curly dock is also used to stimulate colon activity and is one of the herbs for constipation relief.


Curly dock tincture diluted in water is used in the treatment of ear mites that are common in cats and dogs.


The young leaves of rumex crispus is edible and contains vitamin A, iron, protein and potassium. But it's not advisable to eat it because it contains a high amount of oxalic acid. Too much oxalic acid in the body can harm the urinary tract and cause the formation of kidney stones. However, the leaves can be used as a first aid to treat insect bites and stings.


Rumex crispus root extract is available in the form of capsules, liquid extract, tinctures, cut and dried and root tea.
