What is walking pneumonia? On this page you'll find walking pneumonia treatment options and remedies and walking pneumonia symptoms as well as walking pneumonia causes.

Walking pneumonia or also known as atypical pneumonia and mycoplasma pneumonia is a bacterial infection that affects the lungs. Walking pneumonia is caused by mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria. It is a mild form of pneumonia or inflammation in the lungs.

A person who has walking pneumonia doesn't require hospitalization. But even though it is mild, mycoplasma pneumonia is contagious. The infection spreads easily through contact with droplets from an infected person.

The common symptoms are almost similar to the common cold. When you are infected with mycoplasma pneumoniae, you may experience chills, cough, headache, low fever, runny nose and sore throat. If the microorganisms infect the middle part of the lungs, the symptoms may include breathing difficulty. If the infection is on the lower part of the lungs, symptoms of atypical pneumonia may include abdominal pain.

The symptoms may last from less than 10 days to 3 weeks depending on what kind of the remedies or treatments you receive. Even after all the symptoms are treated, it's common that you will still feel tired and the dry cough will prolong. If your immune system is weak, the recovery time will be longer or you may develop other infection.

Walking pneumonia treatment No. 1 - Fight the bacteria

If your body resists antibiotics or if you don't like it, take herbal extracts that have anti bacterial properties such as olive leaf extract, grape seed extract, echinacea, goldenseal root or garlic. Bee pollen, propolis and colloidal silver also have antibiotic properties. Increasing your dosage of vitamin C would also help fight the bacteria.

Walking pneumonia treatment No. 2 - Treat the symptoms

One of the symptoms of walking pneumonia is sore throat. Drinking marshmallow root tea, slippery elm or honeysuckle tea would help reduce or treat the inflammation. To ease the hacking cough, mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, a teaspoon of honey and a little bit of lemon into a quarter cup of warm water and drink it.

Walking pneumonia treatment No. 3 - Strengthen your immune system

Drinking echinacea tea or taking echinacea extract may help stimulate the immune system and treat respiratory problem. Astragalus root extract is a natural antioxidant and immune booster as well as has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Other herbs include cat's claw, echinacea, elderberry and goldenseal.

Walking pneumonia treatment No. 4 - Diet

Take chicken soup to help reduce the dry cough. Include garlic, ginger and cayenne pepper in your dishes. Your diet should include fresh fruits and vegetables that contain vitamin C, zinc and antioxidants. Drink lots of water to keep hydrated and to flush toxins from your kidney. Reduce milk intake if you are coughing out a lot of phlegm.

When you cough or sneeze, make sure that you cover with a handkerchief or tissue. It's also a good idea to wear a mask to cover your mouth and nose. Wash your hands before and after you touch anything or anyone and don't share food or things such as drinking glass.

Take lots of rest.
