Home Remedies for Vaginal Odor

One of the most common causes of vaginal odor or feminine odor is bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is caused by the overgrowth of normal bacteria in the vagina and can happen during heavy menstruation, menopause and pregnancy.

Other vaginal odor causes include chlamydia, gonorrhea, pelvic inflammatory disease and yeast infection. Poor hygiene such as not changing the tampon regularly and not cleaning the vagina and anus can also cause foul vaginal smell.

Here is a list of remedies to get rid of the vaginal smell. But do find out the underlying cause and other signs and symptoms that accompany the odor.

  1. Wear 100% cotton panties that are loose to allow smooth flow of air and proper ventilation in the vaginal area. Get rid of synthetic panties and panty hose because they trap air, heat and moisture and your vagina will become an ideal place for bacteria and yeast to grow and multiply.

  2. Stop vaginal douching because it can cause an overgrowth of bad bacteria and this can lead to bacterial vaginosis or yeast infection and feminine odor. It can also cause infection to the uterus, fallopian tube and ovaries. You only need to wash outside and not inside the vagina and using mild soap and water are sufficient. And when you wipe your anus, make sure it's from the front to the back.

  3. After washing and taking your shower, dry your vagina and groin and all the folds naturally. Unless you really have to, leave out the panty liner. Don't apply anything else except talcum powder.

  4. If you are overweighed, your legs will tend to rub against each other and trap moisture and it becomes moist and sweaty down there. Losing the extra weight will overcome the problem and is also necessary to reduce the risk of serious health problems.

  5. Changing your tampons or sanitary pads regularly will also help. And you should not use those that are scented because they contain chemicals and additives.

  6. Certain foods do affect the smell of your vaginal discharge. Sugar for example encourages yeast infection. Including yogurt in your diet daily or taking acidophilus supplement will help balance the bacteria in the vagina. Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and avoiding meat may also help. Drink lots of water and other liquids that are beneficial are lemon juice and cranberry juice.

  7. Herbal dietary supplements that may help treat feminine odor are alfalfa, and chlorophyll. Herbs that you can use as suppository are tea tree oil and garlic.

Practice safe sex and use protection. Bear in mind that your partner can transmit sexual disease. Wash up after sexual intercourse to remove semen or sperm. This is especially necessary if you have bacterial vaginosis because it will significantly increase the PH of the vaginal secretion and make the vaginal odor smells so strong.
