White willow bark

You'd probably have heard that taking two over the counter analgesic or pain reliever such as aspirin will provide tooth pain relief. Any over the counter medication which contains a derivative of salicylic acid called acetylsalicylic acid or ASA will help reduce inflammation.


But if you want to opt for natural and herbal toothache remedy, then white willow bark is the herb for you. Willow bark is a natural pain relief medication. Native Americans used to chew the bark as a tooth ache remedy. White willow bark is available in many forms including capsules, liquid extract, in powdered form, tinctures, tablets and also willow bark tea.


Garlic

Garlic is quite known to be effective as a tooth ache remedy. The compounds especially allicin found in garlic produce antibiotic and anti microbial effects. To provide toothache relief, crush a clove or two of garlic and place it directly on the aching tooth or in the cavity.


Cloves

Another tooth ache remedy is to use cloves. Cloves contain oil called eugenol which is a natural analgesic and antibiotic. Cloves also have anti inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Here's how to stop a toothache using clove.


Place a few drops of clove oil on a cotton ball or a piece of gauze and place it on the affected tooth and not on your gum. If you don't have any clove oil, take two cloves, chew them and let them sit on your aching tooth. You can also use ground clove.

In the past, yarrow was known as the healing herb. It is another herb that is used as a tooth ache remedy as it contains salicylic acid which is known to ease pains.


Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of the spices that produce a healing effect. To use it, fill your cavity with ground cinnamon.


Onion

If you don't have any herbs in your kitchen except onions, then it is good enough. Onions have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Slice an onion and place one piece on your tooth that aches. Let it sit there for a while. If the pain has subsided but is still disturbing, spit it out and place another slice of onion.


Other herbs that may provide toothache pain relief are guava leaves and catnip leaves or catnip oil.


Hydrogen peroxide

It is a good idea to keep a bottle of a 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide at home because of its many uses including as a home remedy for toothache especially if there is an abscess. Mix an equal amount of hydrogen peroxide with water. Swish and gargle it in your mouth and then spit it out. Repeat this several times a day.


Oil pulling therapy

If you haven't heard of this term, it is actually an alternative healing method and a traditional Indian folk remedy. It is also sometimes referred to as oil swishing. The procedure is simple. Use one tablespoon of coconut, sesame, sunflower or vegetable oil and gargle and swish for about 15 to 20 minutes before spitting it out.
