Teeth Whitening Home Remedies

You are probably aware that coffee, cola, grape juice, red wine, tea and tobacco are some of the causes of stained or yellow teeth. The easiest solution to whiten stained teeth is to get a cosmetic cleaning done by a dentist or professional. But it is costly. So here are a few suggestions and home remedies for whitening teeth.

3% Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide has antiseptic qualities. It also has the ability to prevent and remove the buildup of plaque. When you buy hydrogen peroxide for the purpose of removing teeth stains, check the label that states food grade 3% hydrogen peroxide solution.


To use it, fill just enough hydrogen peroxide in your mouth. Leave it in your mouth and swish it as long as you can, preferably about 20 minutes. Avoid from swallowing the solution. 20 minutes can be a long time for some people, so while waiting for the time to pass, do the dishes or any other housework. Spit it out after that. It may take between a few days to a few weeks to see results depending on how bad your stained teeth are.


Baking soda

You can use this baking soda solution to whiten teeth in addition to the hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening home remedy. Baking soda, bicarbonate of soda, sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate is one of the most popular products used in teeth whitening home remedies.


Here are 3 options to use baking soda to whiten yellow teeth. When you use baking soda, make sure you thoroughly rinse your mouth after that to remove the residue. You still have to use toothpaste after using this teeth whitening at home treatment to clean your teeth and freshen your mouth. It's not advisable to use baking soda daily as it is quite abrasive.


  1. Wet your toothbrush and apply a thin layer of baking soda and clean your teeth.


  2. Dip your toothbrush in 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide and then apply the thin layer of baking soda.


  3. Add the baking soda powder to your normal toothpaste and brush your teeth as you normally do.

Kaolin clay

Kaolin clay, white dirt, chalk or white clay is mineral rich medicinal clay and regarded by some people as a natural teeth whitening agent. The powder is added in some toothpastes. Kaolin clay which is available in powder form produces a gentle abrasive action.


South Americans have been using kaolin as a folk medicine to treat upset stomachs. The Africans use it as a face mask and also ingest it to suppress hunger. And it is also used in traditional Chinese medicine. To use it as one of your teeth whitening home remedies, wet your tooth brush and apply the powder on it. Just like baking soda, use the kaolin powder as a teeth whitening agent only once a week.


Once you have whitened your teeth and removed the stains and plaque, here's how to maintain them.


  1. Keep your teeth clean by practicing basic oral hygiene such as brushing your teeth at least twice a day. Do it once in the morning upon waking up and once right before bedtime. Remove food debris in between teeth and from plaque buildup by flossing. Brushing your teeth after each meal is also recommended.


  2. Quit smoking or the tobacco chewing habit. If you can't stop, reduce. Reducing the consumption of beverages such as coffee and cola will also help prevent stained teeth.
