Is there a snoring cure? Here are several snoring remedies and tips to stop snoring. It includes the use of herbs as natural snoring remedy and also the use of anti snoring devices or snoring aids.
But what causes snoring? Why is it that some people don't snore when they sleep, some snore occasionally while some others are habitual snores?
Snoring occurs when breathing or the nasal passage is obstructed. There are several factors that can lead to the obstruction of the flow of air though the mouth and nose. Some of the causes include nasal congestion due to sinus infection, the common cold, allergies, mouth anatomy which may include long and soft palate and collapsing nostrils, sleep apnea, sleeping position, alcohol consumption before bedtime, being overweighed and large tonsils.
Sleeping on your back can block your airways because the soft palate and tongue will rest against the back of your throat. When you fall into deep sleep, the muscles in the roof of your mouth relax and the air that flows pass the relaxed tissues will cause the walls of the throat to vibrate and lead to snoring. If this is the reason, the simplest snoring remedy is to change your sleeping position.
Sleeping on the side is the answer. To make it a new habit, place something hard in the middle of your back such as a tennis ball so that you will feel uncomfortable if you do. A simpler method to prevent you from rolling onto your back is to use a positional sleeper which is easy to use.
Calculate your BMI to find out if you are overweighed. It is a measure of your body fat based on your height and weight. If your reading is between 25 to 29.9, you are overweight. If it is above 30, you are obese. Being overweight will cause excess fat to build up around the neck. It will put pressure on the airway causing it to partially collapse and block your nasal passage. The obvious cure for snoring in this case is to eat less fattening foods, start eating a balanced healthy diet and do regular aerobic and weight training exercises.
If you have the common cold or flu, it is quite common to have a blocked nose and cause you to snore because you have to breathe through your mouth while you sleep. Once you treat the symptoms, the snoring will stop. Allergies, hay fever or also called allergic rhinitis and sinusitis may also cause snoring and sleep apnea. To treat the blocked nose caused by any of these conditions, squirt saline spray into your nose before bedtime.
It is not advisable to use over the counter decongestant nasal spray for more than 3 days. Even though the nasal decongestant may reduce swelling of nasal passages, it may cause a rebound effect. It is better to make your own saline solution by mixing teaspoon of salt, a pinch of baking soda and a cup of tepid water. Pour the solution into a nasal spray bottle and spray it into your nose.
If nasal congestion or pollutant is the cause of snoring, herbal extract may help. You can place essential oils such as eucalyptus and peppermint, thyme and marjoram or lavender and chamomile in an aromatherapy diffuser or nebulizer. You can also spray the oil on your pillow at bedtime to help you relax and improve your respiratory system.
Taking certain herbs such as ginger, hyssop, horehound and thyme may help relief nasal congestion. Herbs that are natural sleep aids include chamomile, lemon balm, passionflower and valerian root. Goldenseal root combined with echinacea may help clear stuffy nose and treat hay fever.
If you suffer from insomnia, avoid taking sleeping pills or tranquilizers because they can cause excessive relaxation of the tissues in your throat and block your airway. Also avoid drinking alcohol prior to bedtime because it will produce the same effect as well as sleep apnea.
Quitting smoking is also one of the ways to stop snoring because smoking irritates the lining of your airway. Other stop snoring home remedy includes getting enough sleep and having a routine sleep and wake pattern. According to experts on sleep disorders and sleep deprivation can worsen snoring.
If none of the home remedies for snoring mentioned above can help cure snoring, you may want to consider using a stop snoring mouthpiece. A snoring mouth guard helps holds your jaw and open your airways to allow maximum air flow and prevent snoring.
Other stop snoring aids include nasal strip, snore pin and snore pillow. An anti snoring device is especially helpful if you have a deviated septum.
