Remedies Using Sage Herb

If you have excessive sweating problem, sage herb might help overcome it. Sage leaf is marketed as a remedy for menopausal sweating but it has the potential to work for others too. But that's not the only benefits of the common garden sage or salvia officinalis.

Studies showed that sage leaf contains so many beneficial organic compounds such as tannic acid, ursolic acid, fumaric acid and caffeic acid. Oleic acid which is an omega-9 mono unsaturated fatting acid is also present. There is also niacin or vitamin B3. It also contains flavones and estrogenic substances.

With all those useful substances and based on studies and trials, sage herb has shown effective as a natural home remedy for several health issues.


A trial done at the University of Medical Sciences and Institute of Medical Plants in Iran found that sage extract has the potential to treat patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative and terminal disease. A person with this disease will initially have a problem recalling and in later stages will experience total memory loss including senses and bodily functions. If sage herb can treat this disease by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down acetycholine, it will help support sufferers especially senior adults to maintain brain health.


Sage is also beneficial for young adults. Studies showed that taking sage supplement may help them improve cognitive or mental function. The experiment done on healthy volunteers showed that sage helped in processing data and in improving memory and attention.


You can also use sage as a mouthwash by adding a few sage leaves into hot water. Gargle the herbal tea when it is already cooled. This isn't new because it was already used long time ago as a remedy to treat oral cavities and for oral health. Sage liquid extract is available to treat all kinds of inflammation of the mouth such as sore throat and tonsils. It is also helpful in treating gingivitis, mouth ulcers and laryngitis. The tannin is one of the compounds that produce the positive effect.


Because of the presence of estrogenic substances, taking sage supplement may help increase a woman's fertility.


The ursolic acid and fumaric acid in sage is beneficial for skin health. Studies showed that the herb may treat psoriasis.


Most of sage essential oil used in aromatherapy is made from another species of sage called Salvia sclarea or clary sage.
