Remedies for MRSA Infection or Staph Infection

If you haven't heard yet, there is bad news for people with mrsa infection or also known as staph infection. To date there isn't any cure for this bacterial infection. The strain of bacteria called methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus, is the cause of mersa infection, and they seem to resist almost all known and strong antibiotics.

But don't despair. You can try herbal or homeopathic remedies, avoid certain foods that can trigger the superbug and practice good hygiene. By doing all these, you may be able to reduce the recurrence and relieve the painful lesions.

Mrsa infection used to infect people who were exposed to health care settings, surgeries, dialysis and other procedures used in hospitals. It was also very common among seniors in nursing homes whose immune systems were weak.

But it is now also affecting people who aren't exposed to those settings. The people who are at risk include those in child care centers, jails, training camps and school lockers. Homosexuals and HIV patients are also at high risk of contacting the mrsa staph infection. In fact anyone who has a weak immune system or has been taking all kinds of antibiotics over the year is at risks.

Staphylococcus aureus or staph aureus are found on the skin and in the nose. They are normally harmless and a person may carry the bacteria without showing any symptoms. The harmful strain is the mrsa bacteria. They are contagious and are transmitted by skin to skin contact.

The early signs of mrsa infections are small red bumps that look like spider bites, pimples, acne or boils. They can appear on any part of the skin such as on the face, jaw, knee, arm pit, thigh and scalp. The bacteria can also infect the bloodstream, bones and joints and internal organs such as the lungs and heart.

Here are a few staph infection treatments that you may want to try or consider. You have nothing to lose. This is because these suggestions are based on using natural healing and medicinal herbs.

Consume lots of garlic.

Swallowing a few pieces of raw garlic at the first signs of an mrsa infection may help prevent it from developing into boils and painful abscess. The compounds in garlic have antibacterial properties. If your blood shows mrsa positive, take garlic pills daily. Active ingredients called scordinin and allicin can boost your immune system.

Use tea tree oil.

A pilot study found that tea tree oil used topically may help prevent the bacteria from spreading to unaffected skin. It may also shrink the boils.

Apply turmeric paste.

Mix turmeric powder with water and make a paste. Apply the paste on the boils and cover with band aid. Turmeric contains curcumin which has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This herb was traditionally used in India as an antiseptic to treat bruises, cuts and burns. You can also use manuka honey or castor oil. These two items can help drain and shrink the boils.

Compress with sea salt.

Add sea salt to warm water, dip a cloth and wring it. Use this warm cloth to compress at the affected area.

Dab the abscess.

Hydrogen peroxide is an antiseptic solution. Dab the liquid at the affected areas. A study conducted using hydrogen peroxide at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in the United Kingdom found that it was able to colonize the outbreaks of mrsa on 11 patients.

Watch your diet.

One of the reasons for your mrsa infections is because of a weak immune system. Your diet contributes to it. What you eat or don't eat can affect your body defense system. Take note of what you eat and notice which one triggers the mrsa infection.

You must try to avoid certain foods and beverages such as those high in sugar. Avoid refined, processed and starchy foods such as white flour, white rice and white bread and opt for whole grains. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber content. Caffeine is also not good for your health so try to reduce it.

Drinking about 8 glasses of water a day will eliminate toxins from your body and keep you hydrated.

Take health supplements such as grapefruit seed extract. Some studies showed that grapefruit seeds have antimicrobial, antioxidants and antifungal properties. The seeds and pulps contain ethanol or as ethyl alcohol which is effective in inhibiting bacteria. Turmeric extract is another herbal supplement that can boosts your immune system.

Another herb that you can add to your diet is oil of oregano. Before you buy one, check that it contains 60% to 80% of carvacrol. Studies have shown that carvacrol can prevent the growth of certain bacteria. A research conducted at the University of the West England in Bristol found that carvacrol is more effective than 18 pharmaceutical drugs.

Olive leaf extract is another good choice. Oleuropein in olive leaf can fight off bacterial infection. You should also add probiotics in your diet. Yogurt and some soy products are high in probiotics which among its benefits include strengthening your immune system and supplying beneficial bacteria to your body.

Practice self care and good personal hygiene.

Do the basic personal hygiene such as washing your hands frequently. If there is a cut or scrape, apply a little tea tree oil and cover it up. And avoid skin contact with others. Use antibacterial soap for bathing. Don't share your towels, drinking cups and other personal items to avoid transmitting the bacteria.
