Flatulence is caused by the presence of excessive gas in the stomach and intestines. And the excessive amount of intestinal gas is caused by several factors including the foods that you eat, the beverages that you drink, the way you eat and the deficiency of certain enzymes.


It is natural for everyone to pass a certain amount of flatus that comprises of carbon dioxide, hydrogen, methane, nitrogen and oxygen every day. Most of the time, the flatus are odorless. But if the gas is followed with bad odor, it is due to the fermentation of undigested food products by bacteria in the digestive system.


If you suffer from excessive flatulence whereby you pass gas more than 20 times a day, it could indicate a symptom of certain illness or conditions such as appendicitis, diverticulitis, gallstones, stomach ulcers or irritable bowel syndrome or also known as IBS. Otherwise, you can try any of these suggestions and flatulence remedy.


Flatulence remedy No. 1 - Identify the cause

In stopping flatulence or flatulence prevention, one of the first things to do is to identify the causes of flatulence. And to do that, try to eliminate or change one thing or habit at a time and monitor the result.


You can start with monitoring what you eat. Foods that contain refined sugars could contribute to the condition. Certain drinks and foods such as beans, broccoli, bran, cauliflower, cabbage, carbonated beverages and dark beer are flatulogenic. If you are lactose intolerant, milk may also cause flatulence. Once you have identified it, eliminate or reduce the drink or food from your diet.


If you like beans for example and they are causing the problem, soak your beans overnight first. The next morning, drain the water and fill in with new water and cook them for about half an hour. Drain the water again and add new water and cook for another ½ hour.


Other things you can do is eating smaller meals and chewing your food slowly. You may also have to stop gum chewing, drinking through a straw and smoking to avoid swallowing excessive air. If you are wearing dentures, ensure that it is properly fit.


Flatulence remedy No. 2 - Herbal remedies

Certain herbs and spices that have carminative properties may help as a natural remedy for gas. They have the ability to prevent the formation of intestinal gas or make it easier for you to discharge the gas which if you can't expel may cause gas pain. You can add the herb or spice in your food, eat it raw or drink the herbal tea. Some of the known carminative and anti flatulence herbs are angelica, aniseeds, basil, burdock root, cinnamon, dill, fennel seed, ginger, lemon balm and peppermint.


Flatulence remedy No. 3 - Alternative remedies

Activated charcoal tables may help absorb excess gas. Drinking a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar that has been mixed with a glass of water may also help prevent bloating which can result in belching and excessive gas. Another home remedy for gas is to drink a mixture of ½ a teaspoon of baking soda and water. The baking soda remedy is helpful if you experience gas pains.


Flatulence remedy No. 4 - Adapt some healthy habits

A few lifestyle changes may help too and one of them is to reduce your stress level. Stress, anxieties and other emotional issues can cause havoc to your nerves, your body's normal functions and also eating habits. So try to relax your body and mind and it will positively affect your digestive process too.


Another good habit to develop is to exercise by simply taking brisk walks daily. Exercising helps in a lot of ways for your general health and it will also aid in the smooth flow of food along your digestive tract.
