Ear Infection Remedy

Before trying your own ear infection remedy, make sure that you have seen a doctor. It could be labyrinthitis or tinnitus. Ear infection normally affects children below 4 years old. Adults are more prone to the swimmers ear.

This middle ear infection or otitis media may happen because of a cold, an allergy, other respiratory problems, viral infections and smoke from tobacco. When any of the conditions happen, the eustachian tube swells. It is unable to function effectively.

This will cause the lining of the middle ear to absorb air and create a partial vacuum. The eardrum is pulled inwards and fluid comes out from the lining of the middle ear. Bacteria from the nose and throat will move up to the swollen eustachian tube and infect the fluid in the middle ear. The fluid will build and it is the reason for the pain and loss of hearing.

Some of the common symptoms of middle ear infections are having a fever, losing your hearing, dizziness and ear pain. If pus, blood or liquid comes out from your ears, it means the swelling has ruptured. It would actually provide some relief and will heal after that.

Middle ear infection is usually not serious but it still needs treatment because if untreated it may cause sinus infection. If your ear infection keeps recurring, it may be referred otalgia. This means the pain originates from outside the ear such as your throat, tongue, tonsils or teeth or it could be due to TMJ.

One of the best ear infection remedy is to use mild heat or warm heating pack on the ear that is causing the pain. Get a clean sock, fill it with salt and heat it in the microwave. Lie down and lay your ear on the warm sock.

Another home remedy for ear infection pain relief is to use herbal oil as ear drops. Mullein flower oil is one of the best to use. If you are in pain and don't have it, use garlic instead. Squeeze a little juice from raw garlic, dilute it with water and drop it into your ears. Here's where you can read the rest of the home remedies for earache.

One of the main reasons for recurring ear infection or persistent ear pain, no matter what ear infection remedy you use, is because of a weak immune system. To overcome the problem, make sure you eat foods and take dietary or herbal supplements that strengthen your body's defense against diseases. Eat foods that are high in vitamins A, C and E. They have powerful anti oxidant properties.

To avoid your infant from getting ear infection, practice these habits:

  1. Make sure your baby is not lying down on his back when he is using the feeding bottle. The milk may flow into the eustachian tube and cause a middle ear infection

  2. Teach your toddler to blow his nose.

  3. Distance your child from cigarettes smokes, polluted areas and other children or adults who are having cold or flu.

  4. Keep your baby's chin up when he is lying down on his back. This will prevent the eustachian from draining fluids into his throat.

  5. Notice any unusual behavior. A baby won't be able to tell you that something is causing him pain. Observe if he is rubbing or pulling his ears as this is usually the first sign. It will normally follow with him getting cranky, a fever, vomiting or he seems not to hear you. If you notice any of these, bring him to see a doctor.
