Dry Hair Home Remedies

Here is a list of dry hair home remedies. These dry hair solutions may help you restore your dry, brittle, damaged and unmanageable hair.

One of the causes of dry hair is the result of using shampoo that contains harsh chemicals. Daily shampooing isn't healthy if you have dry scalp. Too much exposure to chlorine in the swimming pool and exposure to direct sunlight without using any sunscreen protection also cause dry hair. Other reasons that contribute to the straw-like hair and split ends are hair treatments such as permanent wave treatment, too much heat from styling tools such as curling iron or hair straightener, hair dyes and so on.

Try any one of these dry hair home remedies and change some of your habits and you might be able to treat your dry hair problem.

  1. If you have extremely oily scalp and hair, it's wise to shampoo daily or else it will cause dandruff. But if you have dry hair, shampooing daily will damage it further. This is especially so if the shampoo contains chemicals because it will remove the natural oil from your scalp and hair.

  2. One of the best home remedies for dry hair is to shampoo your hair every three days or more. If you feel that it's dirty, what you can do is wash your scalp and hair only with water and then use a conditioner. When you wash your hair, avoid using your fingernails to scrub. Hair that is already brittle will break easily and may cause you to experience thinning hair or hair loss.

  3. Choose the right shampoo and conditioner. Those that contain either or a combination of aloe vera, jojoba oil, lavender, olive oil and rosemary are suitable for dry hair.

  4. Avoid using hair styling tools such as the hair dryer, hot rollers or hair straightener. The heat will further cause breakage and damage it. If you must use a hair dryer, set it at low setting.

  5. Using the right kind of hair brush is also important when it comes to the treatment of dry hair. The wrong brush can cause it to break while brushing. It's even better if you don't brush your hair while it's wet.

  6. Another way to treat dry hair is to apply hot oil treatment once a week. Heating up the oil and leaving it on your hair for about 20 minutes can help restore it back.

  7. When you go out in the sun, use a hat or scarf to cover your head. Applying a leave-in conditioner with spf hair protection will help a lot.

  8. Until your hair is manageable again, try to avoid any kind of hair treatments. If you insist on it, try to space them like not dyeing and straightening at the same time.

  9. Using olive oil is one of easiest and the best dry hair home remedies. Apply the oil on your dry hair thoroughly right to the tip of the hair. If your scalp is also dry, it's alright to even apply on it. Cover your head with a plastic or shower cap and leave it overnight for it to work.

What you need to do next is apply your shampoo and massage your hair until it forms into lather without adding any water. You then rinse the lather with water. Shampoo again and rinse and then apply your conditioner. Other herbal oils that may be effective as dry hair home remedies are avocado oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, neem oil, rosemary oil and sweet almond oil.

  10. Mayonnaise is another popular dry hair home remedies that may restore your hair. All you need to do is apply natural mayonnaise on your hair and scalp, cover your head and leave it for at least half an hour. After that, you shampoo and rinse.

  11. Another one of the traditional dry hair home remedies is to use egg white. Mix an egg with lukewarm water and apply on your hair. Leave it for a while and rinse with water without shampooing.
