Remedies for Bites and Stings

Bites and stings will cause itching and redness. Sensitive individuals, children and the elderly may experience severe allergic reactions, inflammations and infections. People with diabetes may develop secondary infections. Some of them can become life threatening.

A tick bite carrying the bacterium called borrelia burgdorferi can cause lyme disease while a tick that carries the bacterium rickettsia rickettsii can result in Rocky Mountain spotted fever or RMSF. A certain tick bite can also cause a viral infection called tick borne encephalitis or TBE.

A mosquito bite can cause diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, Japanese encephalitis and West Nile virus. Black fly bites and mosquito bites can cause filariasis. Leishmaniasis is caused by sand fly bites while the sleeping sickness is caused by tsetse flies. Typhus is a bacterial disease spread by lice or fleas. Chigger which is a type of mite will cause severe itching and redness.


You must remove the venom if you are bitten by the black widow spider or the brown recluse spider. If not treated, spider bites can cause intense abdominal pain, chills, fever, nausea and vomiting.


A wasp sting from a bumble bee, killer bee, paper wasp, the yellow jacket or the bald faced hornet will cause intense stinging sensation, swelling, allergic reactions and toxic reactions. Bed bug bites will cause itching, swelling and an infection. Flea bites can lead to papular urticaria which among the symptoms include very itchy red lumps.


A bite from a rabbit can lead to a disease called pasteurellosis. Cat and dog bites can cause streptococcal infection, staphylococcal Infection and capnocytophaga infection. A bite from an infected cat, dog, fox and monkey can cause a disease called rabies.


Scorpion bites are painful and if your child is stung by a scorpion, you must get immediate medical help. In some parts of the world, certain scorpions are toxic and can be life threatening. And if you are bitten by a poisonous snake, you need emergency medical attention.


A cat fish sting normally doesn't need medical treatment unless the spine penetrates deep into the skin. But you still have to treat the wound to prevent and infection. Jellyfish produce venom and you must remove the stinger from the skin and remove the venom immediately.


As a first aid for bites and stings, always wash the affected area thoroughly with antibacterial soap and water. Apply an ice pack covered with a thin cloth to reduce pain and swelling. If there is a minor wound, apply an antiseptic or antibiotic lotion or cream and cover it to prevent and infection. If a wound is deep, try to stop the bleeding and you must see a doctor immediately.
